The Town of Gilbert is located in the southeast portion of the Phoenix Valley.
Gilbert’s covers an area of approx 72.6 square miles. The Town of Gilbert shares boundaries with
the City of Mesa, the City of Chandler, Town of Queen Creek, The Gila River Indian Community, and Pinal County. In 1902 the Arizona Eastern Railway solicited donations of the right of way in order to establish a rail line between Phoenix and Florence. There was a rail siding established on the property owned by William “Bobby” Gilbert. The rail siding and the Town that began to develop became known as Gilbert. Gilbert was a farming community that helped to fuel the families and workers for the construction of the Roosevelt Dam, The Eastern Canal, and Consolidated Canal in 1911. The Gilbert area was known as a very fertile and rich farmland area, great for growing grains, melons, cotton, and alfalfa hay. During World War 1 the Town of Gilbert helped supply alfalfa for the ever-increasing need for hay for the horses. Gilbert became known as the hay shipping capital of the world.
