Mount Lemmon Ski Valley

Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley, located in the Santa Catalina Mountains in the Coronado National Forest, is the southernmost ski area in the United States. Located just thirty miles north Tucson, Arizona, Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley offers both Alpine skiing and snowcat skiing along with a healthy dose of breathtaking beauty.

Whether you are a beginner looking for instructions and equipment or an advanced skier ready to take the plunge through the white wilderness, Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley has at least eighteen designated trails available including beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Rentals are provided for snowboarding equipment and ski equipment, although you may certainly bring your own.

Children’s programs, snowboard lessons, and skiing lessons coupled with some of the best skiing in Arizona lure many skiers and potential skiers to this scenic spot. The area, accessible by paved road, is also a great place to enjoy the changing colors of fall, play in the snow without the support of skis, or escape the hot desert sun.

Resting near the 9,157-foot summit of Mt. Lemmon, over seventy acres of white slopes dotted with Ponderosa Pine, Quaking Aspen, and Douglas Fir provide hours of glistening fun. Skiers can choose among one surface lift and two double chair lifts for their exciting ride to the very top of the shimmering slopes.

With at least 175 inches of annual snow a year, Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley does not have to invest in man made snow. Although the ski runs are only open from December through April depending on snowfall and winter weather, Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley is a happening spot all year long. Oktoberfest, complete with German delicacies, beer, music, and dancing, is held there during three weekends in October and one weekend in November.

The Iron Door Restaurant satisfies the hunger of weary yet happy skiers and sightseers with heaping bowls of hot chili and hunks of delectable cornbread. Smaller cravings can be satisfied and bellies filled at the area snack bar as well.

Open year round, numerous trails and scenic overlooks present additional avenues for enjoyment in this vast wilderness. In fact, scenic views including the city of Tucson, the Santa Catalinas, the San Pedro Valley, and the Reef of Rocks, are visible from the high overlook accessed by the chair lift that operates all year long.

From the mouth-watering fudge to the thrilling sky ride with a bit of skiing in between, Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley has it all.
